Working as a healthcare professional

How can I work as a Consultant in the UK?

In order to work in the UK as a Consultant you need to:

  • be a fully qualified doctor with at least 2 years’ work experience after completion of specialist training
  • have a very good knowledge of English
  • be an European Economic Area (EEA) national.

We suggest a minimum of 2 years' work experience for Italian specialists wishing to work at Consultant level in the UK, to reflect the fact that specialist training in the UK is longer. All UK doctors have to do two years postgraduate training in their chosen specialty followed by four to six years of higher training in that particular specialty. This means that doctors take six to eight years to be ready to work as a specialist in the UK, by which time they are already well experienced in working autonomously.

Italian specialists with less than 2 years' work experience post-specialisation are advised to seek work in the UK initially at Specialist Registrar level.

Please visit NHS Jobs and BMJ Careers for information on current vacancies, NHS Careers for general information on careers in the NHS, and the General Medical Council website for registration with the GMC.

Should you wish to consider registering with a private recruitment agency we advise you to select from this list of agencies which operate in accordance with the NHS's Code of Practice.
