Driving in Italy
BEFORE LEAVING THE UNITED KINGDOM
Get a nationality badge sticker to display at all times on your vehicle.
ONCE YOU ARRIVE IN ITALY
Get your insurance sorted out. At least get a Third Party cover, assicurazione della responsabilità civile (also known as RCA auto). Full and comprehensive insurance, kasko, is also available.
If you have a UK Drivers' Licence, you may use it for up to one year after you arrive. Unless you already have the EU standard licence, you should exchange your old UK licence for an Italian one, patente di guida, once the initial 12 month period is up. For more information regarding what to do with your car or driving license when moving to a new country, visit DVLA - Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.
Once in Italy you may want to contact your local ACI - Automobile Club d'Italia (Italian only), the AA/RAC equivalent, with a capillary network of offices in nearly all cities and towns. They are also agents for government offices such as Motorizzazione Civile and, for a small fee, will save you journeys and queues.
You may use a foreign-registered vehicle in Italy up to six months from your arrival, after which you will be expected to hold an Italian vehicle registration mark (nazionalizzazione).
You may also want to view the following websites:
- Motorizzazione Civile di Roma (Italian only)
- Motorizzazione Civile di Milano (Italian only)
OTHER USEFUL WEBSITES
- Europa, travelling in Europe;
- Ministero dei Trasporti (Italian only): the Italian Transport Ministry gives out information on road works, traffic, etc.;
- Self-driving motoring holidays, with information on Italian motoring laws.
