How to register a death
It is obligatory to register the death of someone who has died in Italy with the Italian authorities. For further information please contact your local Town Hall (Comune, Circoscrizione or Municipio).
There is no obligation for the death overseas of a British national to be registered with the British Embassy. However there are the advantages that a British form of death certificate is then available, and that a record of the death is afterwards held at the General Register Office in the United Kingdom.
If you send in your application by post, your documents will be returned to you by Posta Celere assicurata. The Embassy cannot accept any responsibility for any delay, loss or damage to your documents caused by the postal services. You MUST complete the attached Posta Celere declaration (PDF, 23 KB), giving a daytime contact telephone number, preferably a mobile, to allow the Postal Services to contact you if necessary. Please complete and return the form to:
British Embassy
Via XX Settembre 80a
00187 Rome
We are unable to return your documents without the Posta Celere declaration (PDF, 23 KB).
The relevant fee must be sent in the form of an assegno circolare made payable to “British Embassy Rome’”. If you are sending your documents by post, you can pay by debit or credit card using our payment authorisation slip (available both in PDF and Microsoft Word format).
The following services are chargeable in Italy under the Consular Fees Order 2008:
- Registering a death in the Consular Register;
- Issuing a certified copy of an entry in the Consular Register of deaths;
- There is also a postal charge for the return of your documents by posta celere assicurata.
Before registering the death we need to see evidence of the national status of the person whose death is to be registered. Photocopies of documents are not acceptable, but original documents will be returned to you as soon as possible.
We need to see:
- The deceased's local death certificate
- Documentary evidence of deceased's claim to British nationality, eg. British passport
PLEASE NOTE
If you are applying from outside of Italy, you should contact your nearest British Consulate, or Passports and Documentary Services Group, Consular Directorate, Old Admiralty Building, London SW1A 2AF Tel: +44 (0)20 7008 0186, Monday to Thursday 10:00-12:00, if you are applying from within the United Kingdom.
Now fill in the death registration form (PDF, 34, KB) and read our bereavement advice.
