Learning Italian

Tuscany, ItalyYou should not count on finding somebody in every situation who speaks English well. This is the Italians’ country, and it is not up to them to speak English, it is rather up to us to be able to express what we need in Italian, however rough and ready.

You will find that even a stumbling attempt to converse in Italian will be rewarded with helpfulness and patience. People are usually flattered when you try to speak their language and will be helpful if you try to use the words or expressions you have already learnt.

BEFORE LEAVING THE UNITED KINGDOM

Consider doing a BBC course: learning the Italian language or attending Italian classes in the Italian Cultural Institute in London.

Make a note of useful vocabulary for the kind of situations you expect to deal with and which aren't covered in the phrasebook.

ONCE YOU ARRIVE IN ITALY

Professional teachers recommend watching television, and particularly advertising spots, where every word is closely associated with the picture. Consider checking the local cinemas and watching a film which you already know, so that you already remember more or less what is going on, and can hear how it is expressed in Italian.

You can also consider continuing your Italian studies at a local language school.

And then… practise, practise and practise!
