The Foreign Secretary met a range of politicians, business leaders and representatives of civil society.

He welcomed the opportunity to continue to engage with Russia on the major global challenges we all face, in which Russia plays a key role, including the Middle East, Afghanistan, Iran, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, climate security and tackling the global economic crisis.

Speaking in a press conference with Foreign Minister Lavrov, David Miliband said their talks had been "substantive and productive" and marked by "mutual respect".

He added that, although there were differences between the two countries, there had been a "genuine search for common ground and common action".

'As a result of our talks, I think we can say that not only do we understand each other better, but we are going to find ways to work together better.'

The visit was part of a continuous political dialogue between the UK and Russia and follows the Prime Minister meeting President Medvedev twice this year and the Foreign Secretary's regular contact with Foreign Minister Lavrov.

The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change was also in Moscow in early October to build momentum for the Copenhagen conference in December.
