ConnectResearch 2008: Strategies and approaches to compete in a global market

Conference
Villa Wolkonsky
Rome, 8-9 May 2008

The  ConnectResearch 08 conference will be held at the British Ambassador’s residence, Villa Wolkonsky, from 8-9 May 2008, in Rome. It follows on from the success of the first Connect Research conference, ‘Connecting Research with industry in Italy and the UK’ which took place at Cranfield University in England in April 2007.

ScientistConnectResearch 08, organised jointly by the British Embassy in Rome, the Italian Embassy in London, and ItaCA (Italians in Cranfield Association), will provide a European-level forum to compare business models, best practices, and stimulate the creation of new contacts that could lead to profitable ventures. The conference will focus on four main themes:

  • Innovation through networks – discussion of successful business models; effective links between research institutes, private companies and public sector organisations; examples of access to public research for SMEs;
  • IPR management: exploiting technology and marketing innovation – research and business perspectives on how to protect innovation and successfully exploit it; case studies of intellectual property management;
  • Funding innovation - how to identify appropriate sources at different stages of development of an innovative technology; examples of public and private streams of funding;
  • EU FP7: an opportunity for SMEs - how SMEs can benefit from the 7th European Framework Programme; what type of assistance SMEs need to participate; ways in which bureaucratic processes could be simplified.

The two-day conference will be structured in the following way: in the afternoon of the first day, leading policy makers from Italy and the UK will make keynote speeches on topical issues, in plenary sessions. There will be an overview of the trends, opportunities and challenges with regard to links between research and industry.

This session will be followed by presentations specifically focussing on the main conference topics. Speakers will be drawn from a wide range of organisations, giving variety in terms of scope, sector, geographical basis, and links between business, research institutes and government bodies.
