Consular helpers in Sardinia
Sometimes the British Consulate is called to assist British citizens taken into hospital or who are in need for other things, usually related to health or old age.
Depending on circumstances, the Consul may visit them, to ensure first-hand that their health situation is under control and to possibly assist in coordinating with travel companies for returning to Britain, or other matters.
However, on some - thankfully rare - occasions, patients remain in hospital even for some weeks. As it is not always possible for the Consul to make regular or routine visits, we may appreciate having the possibility of asking an Italian speaking British resident to assist in some way – for example by making a visit and helping both patient and hospital staff with language problems; or perhaps to take in an English newspaper and to read it for a while. Such visits are extremely valuable for keeping the patient company, especially if the patient is alone and feels isolated and depressed.
Consular helpers have no obligations or privileges. They are a network of volunteers, who give up some free time on these rare occasions.
Our Consulate covers the whole of Sardinia and receives calls for assistance from throughout the island. The more “helpers” we have available, hopefully the better we can look after British citizens – whether residents or visitors – in the event of real need.
Being part of the resident British community in Sardinia can also mean volunteering to be a Consular Helper.
We are currently particularly interested in finding helpers in the following areas: Sassari, Nuoro, Oristano, Alghero and Olbia. For more information, please contact us on 070 828628, Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 9.00 and 12.30 am or e-mail us.
